Bodrum
Bodrum town is the current name for the ancient city of Halicarnassos. This place has been on maps for at least 3,000 years.
Beseiged by Alexander the Great, birthplace of Herodotus, resting place of Mausolus (whose tomb is where the word mausoleum come from)... and the crusader castle built using recycled bits of the ruins of Mausolus' tomb.
Bodrum, in August / September, is a kick arse party town, and is full of huge numbers of both holidaying Turks and British.
Here's some views of the town.
[back] Click the "back" link at left now if you have no interest in very old broken things....otherwise...a squillion museum photos follow.
The crusader castle has been turned into a museum of underwater archaeology.... and is just a spectacular re-use of the space. Some of the photos include funny bits of the castle walls, where carvings from the salvaged mausoleum are visible and looking amusing. There's a bunch of coll crusader graffitti... 13th century style too.
In the grounds of the castle, the collection of sculpture is displayed ... kind of everywhere. A bunch of millstones too. Feel free to try your hand at translating some of the chucks of column etc.
Also outdoors, and under a canopy is a collection of amphorae showing the evolution over time.
There is a spectacular gallery of glass ingots and glass objects retrieved from shipwrecks.llbut the light level is maintained so low it was hard to get good photos.
There are a number of shipwreck displays.. this one includes the Tektas wreck and its cargo.
... and the mother of all wrecks, the earliest trading cargo ship wreck found to date, called the Ulunburun wreck.
Then, there was the display about the Carian Princess... whose remains are on display too!
